Minister Oyetola Says He Won’t Contest 2026 Osun Governorship Election Calls for Unity Among APC Aspirants
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and former Governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola, has announced that he will not be contesting the 2026 governorship election in the state.
Oyetola made the announcement during a meeting with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun, where he also underscored the importance of unity within the party as it prepares for the next gubernatorial race.
While acknowledging that the APC maintains the principle of first right of refusal for its ticket, the minister emphasized that all aspirants must involve party leaders and members in their consultations ahead of the primaries.

“I will not be contesting the 2026 governorship election,” Oyetola declared, urging those seeking the party’s nomination to prioritize internal harmony and transparent engagement with the party’s structure.
He extended his best wishes to all aspirants and called for a collective front to strengthen the APC’s position heading into the 2026 election.
Oyetola served as governor of Osun State from 2018 to 2022 before losing his re-election bid to the current governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke.
Already, several contenders have expressed interest in the APC ticket, including the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji; APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru; Dotun Babayemi; Akin Ogunbiyi; and former senator, Babajide Omoworare.
As the contest intensifies, party stakeholders are expected to focus on building consensus to prevent internal rifts that could undermine the APC’s chances in 2026.
