MOSOP Demands Probe as Ogoni Leaders Accuse Local Elites of Looting $300M Oil Settlement, Urge Tinubu to Investigate Massive Fraud
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to launch an immediate investigation into the alleged looting of $300 million (approximately ₦480 billion) earmarked for development and compensation in Ogoniland.
The funds, part of an out-of-court settlement with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), were originally intended to support critical infrastructure and help resolve the long-standing oil-related crisis in the region. However, MOSOP alleges that the money was misappropriated by a mix of local insiders and powerful figures in Rivers State.
In an interview with Vanguard in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, MOSOP President Fegalo Nsuke condemned the diversion of the funds, calling it “a genocide executed against the Ogoni people and the Niger Delta.”

“We’re convinced the $300 million was shared among a few individuals,” Nsuke declared. “That money could have transformed our communities by solving basic needs like water, power, roads, and education.”
Nsuke accused the government of complicity through its silence and said only a full-scale investigation and recovery of the funds could restore public trust.
Initially skeptical of the allegations, Nsuke said newly obtained evidence makes it clear that greed sabotaged a rare opportunity to bring peace and development to Ogoniland. “This is worse than some of the human rights violations we’ve previously accused the Nigerian state of,” he noted.
He stressed that the missing money could have addressed urgent needs and laid the foundation for resolving a crisis that has spanned over three decades.
“It’s unacceptable for $300 million to disappear while our people still lack clean water, basic electricity, and access to education,” he said, urging the Tinubu administration to act swiftly.
Calling for accountability, Nsuke warned: “Silence is no longer an option. Ogoni people know this money existed—and it must be returned to serve its intended purpose.”
He concluded by appealing to those involved in the alleged fraud to voluntarily return the funds, adding that the Ogoni people have endured enough hardship and betrayal.
