NANS President Sues DSS, NTA, and Seyi Tinubu for N38.3 Billion Over Alleged Abduction and Torture
The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking enforcement of his fundamental human rights and demanding N38.3 billion in damages over alleged abduction, torture, and unlawful detention.
Filed on May 14, 2025, the suit (case number FHC/ABJ/CS/966/2025) names the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), and Mr. Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as respondents.
Represented by lawyers Ugwueze I. Oduegbu and R.O. Ifebhor of Ajunwa & Co., Comrade Isah claims he was abducted and detained for more than 15 days without trial. He alleges he was subjected to brutal torture, including beating and stabbing, which caused severe injuries and trauma. The student leader asserts these acts were politically motivated attempts to silence his leadership within NANS.

In his suit, Comrade Isah seeks several reliefs, including declarations that his abduction and detention violated his rights to personal liberty and freedom of movement, and that the abuse he suffered amounted to inhuman and degrading treatment in breach of both the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
He demands an immediate and unconditional release, an injunction preventing further abuses, and general and exemplary damages totaling N38.3 billion, with 20% compound interest until full payment or deposit in a court-controlled interest-bearing account.
Court documents outline the grounds for the suit, citing “blatant kidnapping and indefinite detention” without legal cause, “unprecedented abuse and merciless torture,” and threats to coerce him into resigning as NANS President.
This legal action follows a prolonged leadership crisis within NANS. Comrade Isah was reportedly assaulted at his inauguration in Abuja by a rival faction allegedly aligned with President Tinubu’s administration. After initial medical treatment at the DSS clinic, he was taken away by DSS operatives under unclear circumstances. His family has raised concerns about his safety, accusing the DSS of unlawful detention and shielding the attackers.
A family member told Journalists, “Since they took him, we have not seen or heard from him. We’re praying nothing bad has happened.” They also expressed distress over his worsening health and the emotional toll on his wife and daughter.
The court is yet to announce a hearing date for the case.
