NAPTIP Launches Probe Into Speed Darlington Over Alleged Sexual Encounter With 15-Year-Old

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has officially commenced an investigation into Nigerian musician Speed Darlington following a highly disturbing claim he made during a live Instagram session, where he alleged to have had a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl.

Speed Darlington, also known by his stage name Akpi, is known for his eccentric personality and outspoken, often provocative style. However, this latest claim, which quickly went viral online, ignited widespread public outrage, prompting urgent calls for his arrest and prosecution.

In the controversial video clip, Speed Darlington explicitly recounted the alleged encounter, causing immediate backlash from the public and relevant government bodies. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) initially responded to the incident but later referred the case to NAPTIP due to limitations in their jurisdiction—particularly because the exact location of the alleged incident could not be established.

Confirming the investigation on Wednesday through its official social media handle on X (formerly Twitter), NAPTIP stated:

“The NAPTIP Cybercrime Response Team has commenced investigations into the disturbing Instagram live video and other videos made by the same individual. We at NAPTIP are committed to a world where children are safe and free from all forms of violence.”

The agency emphasized that it is thoroughly reviewing the content for any potential violations of Nigeria’s child protection and anti-trafficking laws. The investigation remains ongoing.

Following the public uproar, Speed Darlington attempted to retract his statement, describing it as a “publicity stunt” designed to promote his new single titled Village Girl. In a follow-up Instagram video, the artist claimed that his original statement was not factual but rather a deliberate shock tactic to draw attention to his music release.

“I’m an artiste, we need controversy to eat,” he said. “When we release a song like Village Girl, which is about coitus, we make sexual content to promote it.”

While he offered an apology to those who were offended, Darlington maintained that controversy is an essential survival tool in the entertainment industry and encouraged aspiring artists to embrace it as part of their marketing strategy.

Despite his apology and explanation, public backlash only intensified. Many Nigerians condemned the musician’s actions, arguing that using sexual abuse—even as a form of entertainment or marketing—is highly irresponsible and dangerous. This is especially critical in Nigeria, a country grappling with endemic problems of child sexual exploitation and gender-based violence.

Child rights advocates and social media commentators questioned the sincerity of Darlington’s apology, with some accusing him of attempting to evade the legal consequences of his public admission through damage control.

One activist commented on X, saying:

“Even if it was a prank, it’s not funny. It trivializes real trauma and can encourage harmful behavior.”

Legal experts have also weighed in, warning that Darlington’s initial admission—regardless of his later retraction—could carry serious legal ramifications. Under Nigeria’s Child’s Rights Act and other relevant laws, any public suggestion of sexual involvement with a minor automatically triggers official investigations and can lead to prosecution.

A lawyer familiar with child protection legislation explained:

“A public confession of this nature is not something the law can simply ignore. Even if retracted, it must be thoroughly investigated.”

Speed Darlington has long built his career on courting controversy, frequently making provocative statements to maintain public attention. However, this latest episode has sparked a national conversation about the boundaries of artistic freedom, the ethics of public speech, and the responsibilities celebrities have in upholding societal standards—especially regarding sensitive issues such as child protection.
