Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Condemns Alleged Attack on Peter Obi, Warns Against Political Violence
The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has strongly condemned the alleged attack on former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, in Edo State, describing the incident as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the senator expressed deep concern over the reported development, stressing that political competition must never degenerate into violence, intimidation, or threats against perceived opponents.
She described the situation as disturbing and unacceptable in a democratic society, warning that such actions undermine the nation’s political stability and unity.

Akpoti-Uduaghan also voiced concern about what she called overzealous political actors who, in an attempt to demonstrate loyalty to powerful figures, allegedly harass or target members of the opposition. According to her, such behavior is reckless, counterproductive, and dangerous to national cohesion.
The lawmaker emphasized that democracy thrives on healthy competition and the protection of dissenting voices. She maintained that opposition leaders have a constitutional right to organize, mobilize, and carry out political activities without fear of harassment or harm.
She urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged assassination attempt and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
“Nigeria must remain a country where political disagreements are resolved through dialogue and the ballot box, not through violence,” she stated.
The latest development comes months after the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, publicly warned Peter Obi against entering the state without prior notification.
In July 2025, the governor stated that Obi’s security could not be guaranteed if he visited Edo without informing him. In remarks that drew attention at the time, he suggested that there was “a new sheriff in town” and insisted that proper protocol be followed.
Okpebholo also questioned the source of a reported ₦15 million donation allegedly made by Obi during a previous visit to the state. He further claimed that unrest followed that visit, during which three individuals reportedly lost their lives.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has faced her own political challenges in Kogi State, reaffirmed her commitment to upholding democratic principles, the rule of law, and the safety of all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation.
