In response to a press release by the NBA National Secretariat on the issues bedeviling the NBA Conference 2017, an Abuja based legal practitioner, Mr Marx Ikongbeh, has urged the Technical Committee on Conference Planning to borrow the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Business Law SBL, Mr Olu Akpata to assist them with the planning of the conference.

Landmark is a great venue for the NBA AGC 2017! it has lot of event centers around that can be used for breakout sessions.

However my suspicion is that the TCCP for whom I have the greatest respect seemed to have missed the essence of a Conference.

To tie conferees to seats is strange and unworkable, a conference is not like a seminar that is a focused event where all attendees are required to exclusively participate and contribute in the slated events.

A conference is akin to a jamboree, it’s a sort of all-comers event with a multiplicity of events going on simultaneously. There’s no need trying to get all conferees to focus on one event at a time.

At Abuja 2015 over 10,000 lawyers were in attendance, the hall could seat only 3,000, but no one complained of lack of seats, cos multiple events held people’s attention at the same time. Ditto for Port Harcourt 2016 with over 11,000 conferees.

In my opinion, a Conference has at least 3 tracks that ought to be allowed to flow in their own right.

1) Knowledge sharing: achieved by the sessions

2) Networking: achieved by interactions, exchanging cards, meeting lawyers from other jurisdictions and forging collaborations

3) Recreation: friendship centre, class reunions, live shows, hooking up with old flames from law school etc.
This last category is underrated but important. If all the conference is spent in friendship centre, it’s still great! That may be the only vacation for the year.

The way the TCCP is going, they want everyone to engage in same activities. I won’t be surprised if they order friendship centre and exhibition closed during sessions. That would be sad and counterproductive.

This TCCP should take Mr. Olu Akpata on loan from SBL, let him teach them how within the limits of the small SBL 2017 he was able to hit off these 3 tracks excellently!

Mr. Sec Gen. I hope these few points of mine will help enrich the discussions with the TCCP tomorrow.
