The Nigerian Bar Association, Bwari Branch, at its monthly meeting, held on the 26th April, 2024, after the presentation of the Branch’s Secretary’s report of the Emergency NEC meeting held on the 20th of April, 2024, in Yola Town, Adamawa State, deliberated on the aspects of the astronomical hike in fee of this year’s AGC Conference registration.

The Branch members considered the NEC report presented by its Branch Secretary and after much deliberation, passed a resolution for the Branch to engage the NBA National President to appeal for the downward review of the AGC Fees. The Branch members in its Monthly General meeting also proposed that the downward review for the following categories of lawyers should be in the following schedules:
1-5 years post call-15, 000,
6-10 years post call-30,000;
and also the downward review of all other categories to an affordable rate, both early bird and regular registrations inclusive.

The members deliberated that the essence of the AGC is networking and that if young lawyers and senior members of the Branch attend virtually, they cannot network, and the physical attendance by members of the Branch is threatened as the registration fees, as currently prescribed, are unaffordable, in view of the harsh economic situations facing our country currently and would thus deprive a greater number of our members from attending the conference, and apart from the conference fees , other ancillary costs also affects the income of the members attending conference and the astronomical cost of the conference registration will certainly cause registration apathy across the branches of the NBA, which may not augur well for the bar.

As a result of the forgoing, members of NBA Bwari Branch are uncomfortable with the conference fees prescribed and have therefore passed a resolution that the fees be reviewed downward to affordable level to enable members attend the conference, as attendance at conference constitutes a very important aspect of continuing legal education development and veritable means of networking.

Dear President Sir, in the circumstance that downward review is not feasible, we further propose the sponsorship of five young lawyers across all the Branches as has been done previously done in 2012,2014 and 2016 regimes, where the National sponsor young lawyers to ease the pressure of Branches, who bears the burden of aiding young lawyers attending the conference.

It is to this end that we write on behalf of the entire members of NBA Bwari to convey the resolution of the members of NBA Bwari Branch, as regards the conference fees currently prescribed for the 2024 Annual General Conference and to appeal that the fees be reviewed downwards to enable members register and attend the conference enmasse, as the NBA Bwari Branch always have large number of members that attends the conference and all NBA activities.

In view of the above sir, we therefore humbly urged that the appeal should find merit and we do not intend in any way to undermine the powers of the National Executive Council resolution, pursuant to Section 13(1) and (2) of the NBA Constitution, 2021. We further appeal that a NEC meeting should be conveyed to consider this appeal and other appeals of similar nature with respect to the subject matter, in the interest of justice.

We therefore use this medium to call on the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, to use his good office to give a deep consideration to the plight of our members expressed above and use your good office to facilitate the review of the fees as prayed.

Please accept the assurances of our highest regards.
