The National Executive Council of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA-NEC) has brought a decisive end to the protracted leadership crisis that had stalled the activities of one of its most powerful and influential sections — the Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL).

At its quarterly meeting held on 15 May 2025 in Ilorin, Kwara State, the NBA-NEC, under the leadership of NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, dissolved the interim caretaker committee managing SPIDEL and constituted a seven-member Electoral Committee to conduct fresh elections during the Section’s Annual General Meeting scheduled for August 2025.
In his remarks, Mazi Osigwe, SAN, informed the Council that months of intense reconciliation and stakeholder engagements had paid off, resulting in unanimous consent from all parties involved. The resolution includes the withdrawal of all pending court cases filed in connection to the leadership tussle.
The newly appointed SPIDEL Electoral Committee is headed by Prof. Paul C. Ananaba, SAN, a prominent leader in the Nigerian Bar Association. The full list of the SPIDEL Electoral Committee members are;
Prof. Paul C. Ananaba, SAN (Chairman, Ikeja Branch)
Kunle Edun, SAN (Member, Warri Branch)
Ibrahim Aliyu (Member, Nasarawa/Kano)
Okey Ohagba (Secretary)
Mojirayo Ogunlana (Member, Abuja Branch)
Saadatu Abdullahi Mohammed (Member, Kano)
Enome Amatey (Member, Calabar Branch)
In response to the NBA-NEC resolution, the immediate past Chairman of NBA-SPIDEL, John Aikpokpo-Martins, expressed profound gratitude to members of the Section for their unwavering support throughout what he described as the most challenging period in the Section’s history.
According to Aikpokpo-Martins, the crisis tested the resilience, loyalty, and integrity of SPIDEL members, many of whom stood firm in support of the elected leadership despite external pressures and intense calls for division. He acknowledged that the collective unity and determination of members played a crucial role in safeguarding the Section’s ideals and ultimately paving the way for peaceful reconciliation.
“This singular action by the NBA-NEC has brought the leadership impasse to a fitting close and resuscitated our dear Section, which had been in a state of hiatus,” Aikpokpo-Martins stated. “It is gratifying that this is coming to a good end.”
He confirmed that, as a result of the amicable resolution, all court actions challenging the previous interventions by past NBA leadership will now be discontinued in the interest of unity and institutional integrity.
“Now we march again under our inimitable Prof. Paul Ananaba, SAN, with heads held high and hope in our hearts, ready to reclaim our enviable position as the flagship of the NBA,” he declared.
