Ndume Fires Back: El-Rufai’s Political Woes Are Karma for Betraying Amaechi

Borno South Senator, Ali Ndume, has taken aim at former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, suggesting that his current political misfortunes are a result of betraying former minister Rotimi Amaechi during the 2023 APC presidential primaries.

Ndume, who led Amaechi’s presidential campaign, made the remarks during an interview on a News Program on Tuesday. He used the platform to criticise President Bola Tinubu’s administration and hint at his own possible exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC) if things don’t improve.

“If I decide to leave the APC, I won’t do it in hiding,” Ndume said. “I still believe President Tinubu can fix things. But if he fails, I may leave.”

The senator also warned that the APC could implode if Tinubu continues to welcome defectors without proper political structure, saying:
“When you overload a ship, it might lead to the capsizing of the party.”

Turning his attention to El-Rufai, Ndume appeared unapologetic about the former governor’s rejection as a minister in Tinubu’s cabinet, hinting it might be poetic justice.

Ndume recalled how El-Rufai originally backed Amaechi before switching allegiance to Tinubu. “He was on our side—Amaechi’s side—before he moved over,” Ndume said. “Now he’s frustrated. Sometimes I just say, ‘You did that to us, now it’s payback time.’”

Ndume, who previously served as Senate Chief Whip, revealed that El-Rufai’s ministerial nomination could have gone smoothly, but was eventually blocked—a move he suggests was deserved.

El-Rufai has since joined the opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) and become an outspoken critic of the Tinubu administration after being sidelined.

Ndume also used the interview to raise concerns over Tinubu’s inner circle, accusing some presidential aides of deceiving the president and tarnishing his image. He warned that the government has been hijacked by “kleptocrats” and “kakistocrats”—terms describing corrupt and incompetent leaders.
