“Nigerian Airports Not Entirely Unsafe,” Says NSIB Director in Response to US State Department
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has responded to recent criticisms regarding the safety of Nigerian airports, while clarifying its involvement in the investigation of the helicopter crash that claimed the life of Access Bank co-founder Herbert Wigwe.
Addressing remarks from the U.S. State Department suggesting that Nigerian airports are generally unsafe, NSIB Director General Captain Alex Badeh told Arise TV that such a broad assessment is unfair. He acknowledged that while improvements are needed, challenges like perimeter fencing and occasional wildlife intrusion are common worldwide—even in the United States.
“It is important to understand the context and criteria used in such safety evaluations. Nigerian airports are not entirely unsafe,” Badeh said, praising the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for ongoing upgrades.

Captain Badeh also corrected reports suggesting the NSIB worked “side-by-side” with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on the investigation of Wigwe’s crash. He explained that the NSIB was an interested party, kept informed by the NTSB, which led the probe. The NTSB attributed the crash primarily to spatial disorientation, also noting shortcomings in the company’s safety management and oversight.
“It’s easy to blame the pilot, but the entire safety system should have reduced the risks,” Badeh said.
Additionally, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, highlighted the Bureau’s expanded mandate following its 2022 establishment act. The NSIB is now Nigeria’s sole accident investigation agency across air, rail, road, and maritime sectors. Frameworks and regulations for maritime and rail investigations are complete, and the Bureau is working with stakeholders to finalize implementation.
