“Obi Is My Greatest Disappointment” — Sowunmi Slams Coalition Talks with Atiku
Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has described Labour Party leader Peter Obi as his “greatest disappointment” ahead of the 2027 general elections. Sowunmi made the remark in response to Obi’s perceived openness to join the opposition coalition being spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Obi, who left the PDP in 2022 to run under the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, gained massive support—especially among the youth—and secured over six million votes, coming in third. Now, as political forces realign for 2027, opposition figures are strategizing to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku is reportedly proposing a grand coalition of opposition leaders and has even suggested Peter Obi as his running mate, with the promise of handing over power to him afterward. Though a PDP heavyweight, Atiku is rumored to be considering leaving the party to lead this proposed coalition.

However, PDP governors have rejected the idea, stating that any alliance must be rooted in the PDP. Segun Sowunmi also voiced strong opposition to the coalition, branding it a selfish ploy designed to benefit select politicians.
“I’m deeply disappointed in Peter,” Sowunmi said during an interview on a News Program . “I had hoped that someone with his popularity would understand the value of aligning with the main opposition force to truly challenge the status quo.”
Sowunmi criticized Obi’s approach, saying, “You made one effort, and now you’re running up and down the street. That’s not how to create change.”
He revealed he had privately warned Obi that if he didn’t decide on a clear political path by May 29, he would be more inclined to support President Bola Tinubu in the next election.
“I told him that he has the chance to become a pan-Nigerian Igbo political leader. But if he wastes that opportunity by joining a shaky coalition, I can’t stand by him,” Sowunmi added.
While Obi has not officially declared his membership in the Atiku-led movement, his presence at coalition meetings has sparked speculation. The next few months are expected to reveal whether Nigeria’s opposition forces can unite—or fracture further ahead of 2027.
