Oloyede Orders Resit for 380,000 UTME Candidates Affected by Technical Disruptions, Including 206,610 from Lagos and 173,387 from South-East

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced that nearly 380,000 candidates, who were affected by technical disruptions during the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), will be given the chance to retake the test.

In a press briefing held on Wednesday in Abuja, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, revealed that 206,610 candidates in 65 centres across Lagos State and 173,387 candidates in 92 centres in the South-East geopolitical zone were impacted by the disruptions. Oloyede attributed the issues to deliberate sabotage of the exam process.

In a rare show of accountability, the JAMB Registrar issued a public apology, taking full responsibility for the disruptions. “I apologise. I take full responsibility,” he stated, assuring affected candidates and their families that the matter was being taken seriously. The Board has already begun sending text messages to the affected candidates, providing them with the details for the rescheduled exam.

The rescheduled UTME will take place between Friday, May 16, and Monday, May 19, 2025. The decision was made in consultation with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), which is also conducting its exams at the same time. Oloyede emphasized that the retake will be conducted under strict supervision, with enhanced technical support to avoid further disruptions.

This announcement comes on the heels of significant controversy surrounding the 2025 UTME. Over 1.5 million of the 1.9 million candidates who took the exam scored below 200, raising alarm within the educational sector and leading to calls for reforms in Nigeria’s computer-based testing infrastructure.

The rescheduling of the exam for 379,997 candidates marks one of the largest retake operations in JAMB’s history and highlights ongoing challenges with exam centre reliability and infrastructure.
