One Nigerian Law School Student Released, Five Still Held Captive Four Days After Kidnapping on Wukari-Benue Expressway

Five students of the Nigerian Law School (NLS), Yola Campus, remain in captivity four days after they were kidnapped along the Wukari-Benue Expressway while traveling to resume classes.

The six students were abducted on Saturday in Benue State. By Wednesday, one victim had been released, but the remaining five are still being held by their captors, who have reportedly demanded a ransom of ₦20 million for each.

The victims, identified as Reverend Ernest Okafor, Ogbuka Fabian, Nwamma Philip, Okechukwu Obadiegwu, Obalem Emmanuel, and Obiorah David, were on their way from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Adamawa when the kidnapping occurred.

It is unclear which student has been released. The incident has raised concern among the students’ families and colleagues.

A fellow NLS Yola Campus student confirmed the kidnapping and expressed fear for the captives’ safety.

When contacted, Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, confirmed police efforts are ongoing but declined to provide details. “I don’t know about any rescue operations because I am not the one in charge of them. But the police are working to bring them back,” she said.

Attempts to reach the Taraba State Police Command were unsuccessful following the recent death of its spokesperson, Abdullah Usman.

This abduction follows a similar case weeks earlier involving 20 medical students from the Universities of Jos and Maiduguri. They were kidnapped in August during a convention in Enugu and released after eight days, with kidnappers demanding ₦50 million.

As of now, the fate of the remaining five law students remains uncertain.
