Osun Set to Generate Its Own Electricity as State Assembly Passes Landmark Power Bill into Law

The Osun State government is set to begin generating its own electricity following the passage of the Osun Electricity Bill into law by the State House of Assembly.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, in a statement on Tuesday, described the legislation as a landmark development that will transform the state’s energy landscape and attract investment into its power sector.

“I was delighted to receive the news of the passage of the Osun Electricity Bill into law by the Osun State House of Assembly. As an executive bill, the Electricity Market Law is a vital tool aimed at strengthening and expanding Osun’s economy by creating opportunities for investors in the power sector, especially through off-grid generation,” Adeleke stated.

The governor noted that the new law addresses long-standing frustrations among Osun residents over poor electricity supply.

“For many years, our people have suffered from persistent power supply issues. This bill, which I will soon sign into law, provides a much-needed policy framework to diversify, open up, and regulate power generation in Osun State.”

Adeleke added that the legislation encourages an inclusive energy strategy.

“The law will promote the right energy mix, allowing renewable energy sources to complement traditional power. Osun State is now open to fresh investments in the energy sector.”

To support the rollout of this new initiative, the government will establish a regulatory agency to oversee the state’s electricity market.

“With the creation of the State Electricity Regulatory Agency, electricity supply in Osun will be effectively monitored and regulated. The agency will also handle service delivery issues involving the distribution company.”

The governor stressed that consumer protection is central to the new law.

“The regulatory commission will address complaints between customers and service providers, issue licenses to power generators, and ensure that the ongoing mistreatment of electricity users is no longer tolerated.”

Adeleke concluded by commending everyone who played a role in drafting and passing the bill.

With the enactment of this legislation, Osun becomes one of the first sub-national governments in Nigeria to take advantage of the 2023 constitutional amendment allowing states to independently regulate and generate electricity within their territories.
