“Pay N5,000 or Bring Fuel”: Edo Policemen Summoned Over Viral Extortion Video
The Nigeria Police Force has identified and summoned a group of officers caught on video extorting money from motorists in Edo State, following public outrage on social media.
A viral TikTok video, initially reported by SaharaReporters, shows officers demanding money from travellers along the Benin Bypass, citing the Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) certificate—even though the Inspector-General of Police had suspended the requirement in July 2024.
In the footage, a commercial driver is questioned by an officer:
“Where is your ECMR?”
The driver responds, “ECMR is illegal.”
The officer replies, “If you don’t have it, you will pay money or you buy five litres of fuel.”
When the driver asks how much that would cost, the officer bluntly says, “That is N5,000.” He then demands an additional N3,000 from another passenger.

The video has sparked widespread condemnation, prompting a swift response from the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
“This action is utterly condemned,” Adejobi wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “The officers have been identified and summoned to Force Headquarters for necessary action. We will not tolerate any act of indiscipline or unprofessionalism. Updates will be provided in due course.”
