PDP Blasts Gov Uzodimma Over ₦2.1B Hajj Spending Amid Deadly Violence in Imo, Demands Resignation

The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fiercely criticized Governor Hope Uzodimma for spending a reported ₦2.1 billion on sponsoring Muslim pilgrims and hosting a grand celebration for them and Vice President Kashim Shettima. The party described the act as “reckless and insensitive,” especially at a time when the state is reeling from poverty, insecurity, and crumbling infrastructure.

In a statement on Sunday, PDP’s State Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, called for Governor Uzodimma’s resignation, accusing him of gross incompetence and misplaced priorities.

According to the PDP, the state government funded the pilgrimage of 315 individuals to the 2024 Hajj and organized an elaborate ceremony to mark the occasion. The opposition party said this spending was indefensible given the state’s worsening insecurity and economic hardship.

“The party is not against religious inclusion,” Obiaku said, “but wasting ₦2.1 billion of public funds while citizens face joblessness, violence, and failing infrastructure is simply unacceptable.”

The outrage came shortly after a brutal massacre on the Umuna–Okigwe Road in Onuimo LGA, where over 20 people were killed, vehicles burned, and several victims abducted by gunmen—an attack that occurred just a day before the Hajj celebration.

PDP accused Governor Uzodimma of turning a blind eye to the killings and instead engaging in festivities. “His silence is a slap in the face of grieving families and shows a shocking lack of empathy,” Obiaku added.

The party also referenced other violent incidents, such as the abduction of 26 people and the killing of one person in Ngor Okpala, allegedly by suspected Fulani herdsmen. It described the governor as detached from the suffering of Imo residents and accused him of prioritizing fanfare over citizens’ welfare.

“The ₦2.1 billion could’ve gone to road repairs, youth empowerment, or paying pension arrears,” the statement noted. “Instead, it was squandered on a vanity project.”

Efforts to reach the state’s APC Chairman, Dr. Macdonald Ebere, for comment were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off.

The PDP concluded by calling on the people of Imo to reject what it described as a “failed and disconnected government” and to demand leadership that prioritizes security, development, and the well-being of its citizens.
