Peter Obi: Nigerians Are Now Refugees in Their Own Land—We Must Rise and Reclaim Our Country
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, on Tuesday decried the worsening conditions in Nigeria, declaring that citizens have effectively become “refugees in their own country.”
Speaking at the launch of a new book titled “Obi, the Political Change Agent” in Abuja, the former Anambra State governor called for urgent systemic change. He said the current political structure is unproductive, unjust, and dismissive of the people’s needs.
“Nigerians must unite to overhaul a system that glorifies ill-gotten wealth and neglects the masses,” Obi said, lamenting the high levels of poverty, insecurity, corruption, and government indifference. He emphasized that a system where government officials are richer than business people signifies an unproductive nation.

Obi criticized how public infrastructure—such as rail lines and projects built by colonial powers—has been destroyed by what he called “Nigerian masters.” He urged citizens to make sacrifices to rebuild the country, promising that the Obidient Movement would seek out honest, capable individuals ready to serve at all levels of leadership.
His remarks also seemed to address frustrations with federal lawmakers who were elected under the Labour Party but have since been accused of abandoning their opposition role.
Turning to the 2027 general elections, Obi stressed the importance of transparency and warned against any attempt to undermine the democratic process. “We will make the election count—and those who don’t want it to count, we’ll count them,” he said, triggering applause from supporters.
Earlier, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, described the group as one of the largest socio-political movements in Africa. He emphasized that it isn’t a political party, but a people-driven crusade focused on reforming governance and demanding true democracy.
“Our nation stands at a crossroads. The old ways have failed us. But the Obidient Movement offers a new direction,” Yunusa said. He reaffirmed the group’s commitment to building a Nigeria that is just, inclusive, and forward-thinking.
With a presence in 28 states and over 500 local government areas already organized, Yunusa announced that full nationwide coverage is near.
Senator Nenadi Usman, Acting Chairman of the Labour Party, praised Obi’s leadership and principles. “Every generation needs a voice that challenges the status quo—Peter Obi is that voice,” she said. “His story represents accountability over impunity, and prudence over recklessness.”
The event served not only to launch a book but to reignite a movement determined to challenge business-as-usual in Nigerian politics and governance.
