Peter Okoye Rebuked by Judge for Falsehoods and Disrespect in High-Stakes P-Square Royalty Fraud Trial

In a tense court session on Wednesday at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Clement Onwuenwunor accused Nigerian music icon Peter Okoye, of P-Square fame, of making false claims in his statement to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The accusations relate to an ongoing trial involving disputes over royalties and company finances.

During the cross-examination overseen by Justice Alexander Owoeye, Onwuenwunor challenged Peter’s assertions about his education, access to company funds, and entitlement to royalties.

The SAN highlighted a clear contradiction in Peter’s EFCC statement where he claimed to be a graduate of the University of Abuja. Court records revealed he dropped out after completing only the 100 level. When pressed, Peter shifted his stance, saying he left at 300 level and transferred his transcript to the University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt—but admitted he had no graduation certificate.

Peter’s combative responses drew a stern warning from Justice Owoeye, who cautioned him for disrespecting the court and speaking rudely to the defense counsel. His lawyer, M.K. Bashir, also intervened to calm his client’s outbursts.

Further inconsistencies emerged when Peter initially claimed that Jude Okoye’s wife, Ifeoma, owned 80% of Northside Music Limited, while Jude held 20%. However, the defense presented the official Corporate Affairs Commission certificate, proving Jude owns 80% and his wife 20%. Peter admitted the error.

The defense also produced bank mandates and Ecobank statements, showing that Peter was a signatory to Northside Music Ltd’s accounts—contradicting his claim that only Jude was a signatory and that he had no access.

The Ecobank statements detailed steady royalty payments from Lex Records via Mad Solutions Limited to the company’s account between 2012 and 2017. Peter had earlier told EFCC he was unaware of any such payments.

Onwuenwunor accused Peter of deliberately misleading the EFCC and the court with falsehoods and contradictions.

Justice Owoeye adjourned the case, scheduling continuation of cross-examination and trial for October 23 and November 10, 2025.
