Pictorial: Bayelsa Police Arrest Judge’s Kidnappers as Governor Diri Rewards Officer Who Rejected $17,000 Bribe with House and Car

The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested the kidnappers responsible for abducting Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court, Governor Douye Diri announced on Wednesday during a State Executive Council meeting at Government House in Yenagoa.

Governor Diri confirmed that all suspects involved in the abduction have been apprehended, with the exception of the gang leader, who remains at large. He issued a stern warning to criminals, emphasizing his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on crime.

Highlighting ongoing improvements in Bayelsa’s security framework, Diri revealed the deployment of drones and CCTV cameras across Yenagoa to support crime-fighting efforts. “In the recent kidnapping of a serving judge, we secured his release without harm. We provided logistics to security agencies, which led to the arrest of the perpetrators, except one still on the run. Bayelsa has zero tolerance for crime,” the governor stated.

During the meeting, Governor Diri also honoured Superintendent of Police Sentome Obi, who rejected a $17,000 bribe from a suspect involved in organ harvesting. The governor commended SP Obi for his bravery, integrity, and dedication to duty, describing him as a source of pride for both Bayelsa State and the Nigerian Police Force.

In recognition of his exemplary service, Diri announced a reward for SP Obi, including a three-bedroom house and a vehicle. He also recommended him for promotion to the Inspector General of Police.

“At a time when the Nigerian Police is battling an image crisis, SP Obi has shown that a good name is worth more than riches. His integrity has elevated the Force’s reputation. I urge other officers to follow his example,” Diri remarked.

Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, praised the state government and its people for producing such a committed officer. He emphasized the need for continued investment in security infrastructure to ensure the protection of lives and property.
