PICTORIAL: Trump Asks Liberian President Where He Learned English, Seemingly Unaware It’s Liberia’s Official Language
U.S. President Donald Trump complimented the President of Liberia on Wednesday for his English-speaking skills, despite English being the official language of the West African nation.
Trump was hosting a White House lunch with African leaders when, following brief remarks from Liberian President Joseph Boakai, he inquired about the business graduate’s linguistic background.

Boakai, who, like most Liberians, speaks English as a first language, responded that he had been educated in his home country.

Facing away from the media, Boakai’s expression was difficult to discern, but his brief, mumbled reply suggested discomfort.
Trump, surrounded by French-speaking leaders from other West African nations, continued to emphasize Boakai’s fluency.
“It’s beautiful English. I have people at this table can’t speak nearly as well,” he said.
U.S. President Donald Trump was joined by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and U.S. Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Boulos during the multilateral lunch, held in the White House’s State Dining Room on July 9, 2025.

American engagement in Liberia dates back to the 1820s, when the Congress and slaveholder-funded American Colonization Society began relocating freed slaves to the region. Thousands of “Americo-Liberian” settlers later declared independence in 1847, establishing a government over the native African majority.
Liberia is home to a wide range of indigenous languages and creolized dialects, with Kpelle being the most widely spoken. Boakai himself can read and write in Mendi and Kissi but communicates primarily in Liberia’s official language and lingua franca, English.
