Police Officer Caught Extorting Travelers in Edo Over Suspended e-CMR: Pay N5,000 or Buy 5 Litres of Fuel

A viral TikTok video has revealed Nigerian Police officers extorting money from travelers along the Benin Bypass in Edo State over the Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) certificate — even though its enforcement was suspended months ago.

The footage, which gained attention on Sunday, shows a tense exchange between a police officer and a commercial driver with passengers. The officer demanded proof of an e-CMR certificate, despite the driver stating it was illegal.

“If you don’t have it, you will pay money or buy five litres of fuel,” the officer said. When the driver asked how much five litres of fuel would cost, the officer replied, “That is N5,000.” Passengers were then seen paying various amounts, some pleading for leniency.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about police abuse and extortion, despite clear directives from the Nigerian Police Force leadership. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had suspended the enforcement of the e-CMR in July 2024 after public backlash.

At the time, police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi clarified that the e-CMR was not meant to generate revenue but to digitalize policing for better safety and crime prevention. The suspension was intended to allow more public education on the initiative.

Yet, as the video shows, some officers continue to demand illegal payments from travelers, raising questions about enforcement and accountability within the police force.
