Politics is not a Profession by Chetam Thierry Nwala

The quest for leaders in our current political space have got me thinking and asking, where we are getting it wrong? Everyone one is striving to lead in one capacity or the other. The unfortunate thing about leadership in this part of the world is that, for you to be given an opportunity you must be a career politician.

The people strive for politicians rather than successful leaders in various aspects of life, like business, academics, law, medicine etc. They look at the track record of how these politicians have led in their previous positions. So rather than have successful leaders in other spheres of life, we only look out for career politicians.

With the way my generation is going, professionalism will soon be a thing of the past as people are no longer interested in becoming professionals in various fields, as everyone is only interested in politics. People graduate from high institutions only to become self acclaimed politicians.

Nobody is ready to study further, nobody is ready to research novelty areas, all we are interested in is to follow one politician or the other. Our generation, is gradually lacking technocrats in various fields as the young ones who are supposed to take over from the current technocrats are only interested in politics.

We will soon have a generation of career politicians rather than technocrats and we would be forced to pay foreign technocrats to do minor jobs for us. One thing i have come to realise is that, politics is not a profession and can only be enjoyed while in power. When out of power, you become a liability but a technocrats or professional is always needed by every government.

One of the reasons why we have failed leadership is because we elect men who have not led in any area of life to lead us. Compare administrations were technocrats or professionals were made governors or given opportunity to lead in various capacities and see the level of progress achieved, to administrations were career politicians who have not got a job in their whole life except political offices and see the level of jamboree displayed.

We need more technocrats in leadership rather than political jobbers. Young Emeka in the University studying mechanical engineering is only interested in graduating so he can become the media aide to his senior friend who is a commissioner. He is not interested in what he is studying, all he wants is to graduate with any grade, no hunger for excellence or creativity.

We have less educated people and more graduates. Students no longer concentrate in their studies, it is either they are attending one political function or the other at the expense of their career. The truth is, if you develop yourself along your career line you will be soughted after. Politicians are not sought after because everybody is a politician.

Been involved in politics is not bad but making politics a career is dangerous to both yourself and our society. Be an outstanding lawyer like Ex-Gov. Fashola, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo and still be involved in politics. These men can never be broke because outside politics they still have a career in legal practice.

For you, you don’t have a career and in the politics you are not being recognised as you are only good to be a P.A or S.A on social media. Most of these politicians have investments that might sustain them when it happens but you, what do you have? A third class, pass or even a second class lower certificate, that is as good as not going to school in our present day Nigeria, because you are not employable.

It is time to look inward and develop yourself. If it takes you studying further, please do. Expand your capacity and capability. Make yourself a brand rather than a liability and a pushover. The process does not promise to be smooth and easy, but at the end you will be glad you took it.

How long will you depend on politicians for house rent, phones, clothes and even food? Develop a career outside politics and become independent. You need not start big but you will certainly be big tomorrow. How many Rivers politicians are technocrats? That’s why we can’t be like westerners, who field in their best for political offices.

It is time for sober reflection.

Only Nigerians Can Make Nigeria Better.
