Prof. Mike Ozekhome SAN: Rising Cost of Living Could Fuel a Powerful Opposition to Unseat Tinubu in 2027

Constitutional lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, has cautioned that the growing cost of living and widespread public dissatisfaction under President Bola Tinubu’s administration may give rise to a powerful opposition capable of unseating him in the 2027 general elections.
Responding to reports of a possible political alliance between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Ozekhome stated that if Nigeria’s fragmented opposition can coordinate effectively, they stand a chance of defeating Tinubu—despite his strong hold over state institutions.

“With the misery and disenchantment on the ground, a powerful force can ease him out of power,” Ozekhome said. “But the forces are massive, with Tinubu controlling virtually every apparatus of state power.” He urged opposition groups to unite, drawing parallels to the U.S. political system where power typically alternates between two dominant parties. “We should have such a template where there is no dominant power bloc,” he added.
Supporting Ozekhome’s stance, lawyer and rights activist Abdul Mahmud criticized Tinubu’s economic policies as neo-imperialist and harmful to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. “Nigerians have suffered enough under Tinubu and will continue to suffer as he proceeds with his neo-imperialist economic policies,” Mahmud told The PUNCH. “Nigerians are tired of Tinubu and anybody but Tinubu will do in 2027.”
However, some political figures have urged caution regarding the emerging Atiku-Obi alliance. Yerima Shettima, National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, said the rumored deal—where Atiku offers Obi the vice presidential slot in a one-term presidency—needs closer examination.
Shettima described the alliance as a potentially pragmatic move aimed at coalition-building within Nigeria’s complex political landscape to unify diverse voter bases and boost electoral prospects. “By aligning with Obi, who has gained significant support especially among youth and progressives, Atiku may be trying to rejuvenate his political capital and present himself as a unifier,” he explained.
Yet, Yerima warned the alliance could ignite intra-party tensions and skepticism about its motives. “Is it a genuine attempt at fostering collaboration, or a calculated maneuver to consolidate power?” he questioned.
Ultimately, Yerima emphasized that Nigerians will decide which political configuration best serves the country’s interests in 2027. “Voters will make meaning out of every permutation and choose what is best for them and the future of Nigeria,” he concluded.
