Rejoinder: Federal Government Planning to Islamize Nigeria Through Back Down by Batari Maji Dauda
I am sometimes appalled by the way our religious leaders put forth their argument against an issue in this country. It beats my imagination that while we preach tolerance and religious harmony in a heterogeneous society in Nigeria, we throw away the baby with the birth water simply because we want to pretend that our faith need not be trampled upon.
The position taken by CAN on the issuance of sukkuk undermines the very essence of preserving our country as a secular state.

Secularism does not mean the absence of holding religious beliefs. Rather, that one is at liberty to practice his faith without any encumbrance. Now, if government decides to float a bond to satisfy the need of a religious belief, why should others feel otherwise? My expectations are that those who do not believe in it will not invest in such bond.
Secondly, one would have thought that CAN could come out with its own product that would satisfy the need of its members. I am aware that both Christians and Muslims believe in the fact that usury is forbidden from the position of the Torah as contained in the Bible and Koran. In my mind, it tantamounts to saying that government should not take interest in the welfare of its citizens when performing pilgrimage to Mecca or Jerusalem. Both religious beliefs know that government sponsors both Christians and Muslims to perform pilgrimage at taxpayers expense to the detriment of none believers. Yet CAN had never raised an eyebrow against such. The problem of Nigeria is that apart from being a problem to ourselves, we like crying wolf when there is none. Every group whether ethnic or religious wants to justify the reason for its existence. We are not doing God’s service by elevating our personal interest over and above Jesus commandments that, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind and soul.
The second law is to love your neighbor as yourself. For now, let me anchor the submission by saying that instead of condemning someone’s product, develop one that can stand the test of time.
Thanks a lot for sharing CAN’s position. Remember Jesus response to the Pharisees that give to Caesar what belongs to him. I think that is the way forward rather than being absurd.
