Speaking during the visit, Marvelous Edwin, the Director of Policies, Programs and Projects (DOPPP), emphasized the importance of second chances, stating that, “Just like a tree cut down can sprout again, those behind bars still possess the potential to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to society.”
The initiative aimed not only to address the material needs of inmates but also to remind them of their inherent worth and capacity for transformation. LAWSAN Kogi’s outreach underscores the role of legal advocacy in humanizing correctional rehabilitation.
While acknowledging the efforts of government agencies in the ongoing reform of Nigeria’s correctional system, the LAWSAN team called for greater federal commitment to the sector. They noted that more must be done to improve the conditions of correctional facilities, ensuring that inmates are not only detained but also reformed and reintegrated into society as productive citizens.
“The prison walls house not just offenders, but potential leaders,” Edwin added. “It is our shared duty as a society to nurture their growth and support their reintegration.”
