Senate Approves More Executive Directors for South-South, South-West, North-Central Commissions
The Nigerian Senate has successfully passed amendments to the Acts that established the South-South, South-West, and North-Central Development Commissions. The changes pave the way for the appointment of additional Executive Directors to improve the administrative efficiency of these regional bodies.
Sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), the amendments were introduced through three separate bills:
-
A Bill for an Act to Amend the South-South Development Commission Act, 2025 (SB. 781)
-
A Bill for an Act to Amend the North-Central Development Commission Act, 2025 (SB. 782)
-
A Bill for an Act to Amend the South-West Development Commission Act, 2025 (SB. 783)
The bills went through all legislative readings and were passed on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Senator Bamidele explained that the amendments are designed to address gaps in the original Acts, particularly concerning the appointment of Executive Directors. He pointed out that the previous structure lacked consistency when compared to the North-West and South-East Development Commissions.

Bamidele stressed that, while the initial versions of the Acts had been signed into law by President Bola Tinubu and were already in effect, it had become clear during their implementation that additional Executive Directors were needed to oversee the various departments and ensure the commissions could effectively fulfill their development mandates.
