Senate Extends 2024 Capital Budget Implementation to December 2025 to Prevent Project Abandonment
The Nigerian Senate has once again extended the implementation deadline for the capital component of the 2024 federal budget—this time until 31 December 2025.
The decision was made during Tuesday’s plenary session after lawmakers considered and passed an appropriation amendment bill. The bill was read for the first, second, and third time on the same day and received overwhelming support from senators.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin announced the extension, following a debate led by Senator Olamilekan Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation.

Adeola explained that the federal government lacks the financial capacity to complete all proposed capital expenditures within the original timeline. He stressed that extending the budget would allow for the completion of ongoing projects and prevent them from being abandoned.
This marks the second extension of the 2024 budget’s capital implementation phase. The first occurred in December 2024, after President Bola Tinubu formally requested that the deadline be moved from 31 December 2024 to 30 June 2025—a move justified as necessary for completing key infrastructure projects and maximizing allocated funds.
As the new mid-year deadline approached, it became clear that many critical projects remained unfinished, prompting this latest extension to 31 December 2025.
With this development, Nigeria is now operating two budgets concurrently: the still-active 2024 budget and the already-approved 2025 budget.
While critics have pointed to the extensions as signs of inefficiency in budget execution by government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), supporters argue that the move ensures continuity, value for money, and the completion of long-standing capital projects.
