Senator Anyanwu Claims PDP National Secretary Role, Signs Anambra Guber Nomination Amidst Tensions
The leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified as Senator Samuel Anyanwu, whose position as National Secretary remains contested, signed the official nomination document for the party’s Anambra State gubernatorial candidate, Jude Ezenwafor.
Anyanwu, despite rejection by the PDP Governors’ Forum and key party bodies, appended his signature to the nomination letter as National Secretary. The letter, dated May 7, 2025, was sent to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), confirming Ezenwafor Jude C. as the PDP’s candidate for the November 2025 Anambra gubernatorial election.
The nomination letter was co-signed by Ambassador Umar Illiya Damagum, the Acting National Chairman, and Anyanwu. This act of defiance highlights the ongoing division within the party, especially as Anyanwu’s role is still disputed after a Supreme Court ruling that vacated the Court of Appeal’s decision to remove him from office.

Despite the Supreme Court ruling, which saw both Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye claiming the National Secretary post, PDP leadership has maintained that the court’s decision does not validate Anyanwu’s claim. The PDP Governors’ Forum has also declared both Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye ineligible for the role, appointing Setonji Koshoedo, the Deputy National Secretary, as Acting National Secretary until a resolution is reached.
This power struggle has led to violence, as a recent Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting intended to mediate the crisis ended in chaos, prompting police intervention. Despite this, Anyanwu remains defiant, declaring his return to the role of National Secretary with the backing of his supporters.
To address the escalating crisis, the PDP Governors’ Forum has called for an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on May 27, 2025, with a national convention planned for August 28–30, 2025, in Kano State.
