Setting the Record Straight: A Rebuttal to Kubwa Express News’ Misleading Report -By Barnabas Kumwar Esq.

Recently, Kubwa Express News published a story containing false information about the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Garki Branch elections. As a concerned Branch member, I am compelled to correct the inaccuracies and provide clarity on the matter.

It is laughable that Kubwa Express News reported that the petitions were sent by the Electoral Committee. To set the record straight, concerned members filed petitions with the NBA Branch Election Appeal Committee (North), citing relevant provisions of the Nigerian Bar Association Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches and the Constitution (2015, amended 2021). The aim is to ensure compliance with electoral rules and maintain the integrity of our branch’s election process.

Several members of the branch wrote petitions stating that:

– Victor Giwa did not meet the qualification requirements based on the number of meetings attended.
– Anthony Bamidele Ojo indicated attending only 4 monthly meetings in his nomination form as against the required 5 meetings. Also, his second nominator did not submit his 2024 NBA Garki Branch due receipt (similar to the case that led to the disqualification of Joyce Odua at the National level).
– Olanrewaju Ojo did not attend upto 5 monthly meeting prior to close of nominations. His second nominator is also not a qualified voter as he did not meet up with 5 monthly meeting attendance.
– I am also aware that there are several petitions against other candidates still under consideration.

I urge Kubwa Express News to retract their misleading report and commit to fact-based journalism, avoiding harm to individuals and the electoral process.

Let us prioritize truth and fairness in our pursuit of information dissemination. Kubwa Express should be patient and wait for official news, rather than being used as an agent of disunity in our young Branch. Such a reportage may affect the final report eagerly expected by several petitioners and concerned members who are resolute to the application of the provisions of the Branch Bye-Law stricto sensu. I am confident that the Branch will emerge stronger and more united.
