Shehu Sani Blasts El-Rufai and Amaechi as ‘Architects of Nigeria’s Security and Hunger Crisis’
Former senator and civil rights activist Shehu Sani has sharply criticized former Governors Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, accusing them of hypocrisy and political opportunism for their recent attacks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
At a press briefing held at his Kaduna residence, Sani condemned both men for lacking the moral authority to criticize the current government, given their own records during their time in office.
“These men should hang their heads in shame,” Sani said. “They were responsible for the banditry, poverty, and hunger they now pretend to oppose. While in power, they ignored these problems and now seek to blame others simply because they are excluded from the present political arrangement.”

Sani specifically blamed El-Rufai for creating the conditions that allowed banditry to thrive in Kaduna during his eight years as governor. He dismissed El-Rufai’s recent comments at a lecture honoring Amaechi—where El-Rufai claimed “urban bandits” had taken over Nigeria’s government—as insincere and driven by personal political disappointment.
“There’s nothing wrong with criticizing a government,” Sani acknowledged, “but when such criticism stems from personal bitterness over missed political appointments rather than genuine concern for the people, it becomes dangerous.”
Sani accused both former governors of trying to destabilize President Tinubu’s administration after failing to secure roles within it. He reminded the public that during their eight years under President Buhari’s administration, they had great power and influence but failed to improve conditions in the North.
“If they truly cared about Nigeria, they would have acted when they had the chance. Instead, they left the North worse off—plagued by insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment,” he added.
While admitting challenges remain in Northern states like Katsina and Zamfara, Sani argued that security has improved under the current government. He highlighted that travel along previously dangerous roads such as Birnin Gwari is now safer and pointed to the relative peace in Southern Kaduna due to efforts by the current Chief of Defence Staff.
Sani urged President Tinubu to do more to meet the socio-economic needs of Northern Nigeria but emphasized the importance of constructive and patriotic criticism, warning against attacks fueled by political bitterness.
“Nigeria’s progress depends on balanced development and criticism rooted in genuine love for the country—not bitterness or political vendettas,” he concluded.
