Southern Kaduna killings: Vanguard Correspondent dragged to court for alleged false publication

Kaduna State Correspondent of Vanguard Newspaper, Mr. Luka Binniyat, has been charged before a Kaduna Chief Magistrate Court 1, for allegedly fabricating injurious and falsehood publication capable of causing disturbance of public peace contrary to section 393 and 113 of the penal code.

Binniyat who was earlier invited by the Department of State Services, DSS, Kaduna State for questioning, drove himself to the office around 10 a.m.

After interrogation, he was handed over to the police who later charged him to court.

The charge read: “On the 22nd day of January, 2017 report at the disposal of the Commissioner of Police Kaduna State reveal that, you Luka Binniyat ‘m’ of No. 7 Peter street Ungwar Boro Kaduna State, a journalist, made a circulatory publication on newspapets and social media containing a falsehood statements capable of breaching the public peace.

“Whereby you stated that five (5) students of College of Education, Gidan Waya, Kafanchan were ambushed and shot dead by herdsmen somewhere close to Gidan Waya amongst other injurious statements which you know and believed very well that it was not true, an intrigue to cause fued among the peoples living within Kaduna State thereby committed an offense punishable under section 393 and 113 of the penal code law of Kaduna State 1991.”

The Chief Magistrate, Emmanuel Yusuf, granted Mr. Luka Binniyat bail to the tune of N200,000 and a surety in like sum. The surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court, covered with a Certificate of Occupancy.

Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kaduna State Council, led by the Chairman, Adamu Yusuf stormed the court premises in their hundreds to show solidarity to Mr. Binniyat.
