Sowore Labels Tinubu’s Government a ‘Bigger Disaster’ Than Buhari’s, Cites Rising Poverty and Insecurity
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has described President Bola Tinubu’s administration as a “bigger disaster” than the previous government of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, which he labelled a “catastrophe.”
In a Facebook post, Sowore expressed deep concern over the deteriorating economic conditions, rising insecurity, poor governance, and what he termed outright incompetence under Tinubu’s leadership—barely a year into his presidency.
According to him, although Buhari’s time in office was catastrophic, the current administration has taken Nigeria’s crisis to a deeper level. He accused Tinubu of worsening the suffering of Nigerians through harsh economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira—moves that have triggered inflation and intensified poverty.

Sowore criticized the government for implementing these changes without any form of social protection, noting that food and transportation costs have more than tripled in some regions, while the naira continues to weaken and corruption thrives unchecked.
He also condemned what he called the recycling of failed political elites in Tinubu’s cabinet, describing the administration as a system designed to reward loyalists rather than fix the country’s pressing issues. He argued that this approach is not governance but an elite settlement scheme.
Sowore pointed out that the same individuals responsible for Nigeria’s decline are being empowered once again, which, in his view, guarantees continued failure.
His criticism comes amid growing public dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living, erratic electricity supply, and unrelenting insecurity across the country. Banditry, kidnapping, and insurgent violence continue to plague various regions, while many citizens say the administration’s promised reforms have delivered only hardship.
A consistent critic of successive governments, Sowore was arrested during the Buhari era in 2019 and detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) over his call for a nationwide #RevolutionNow protest. Despite ongoing legal challenges, he has remained vocal against the political establishment.
As the 2027 general election approaches, political observers suggest that Sowore is positioning himself and the AAC as a radical alternative to Nigeria’s mainstream parties. He warned that unless Nigerians rise to demand genuine change, the current wave of suffering will only deepen.
Sowore emphasized the need for a government that serves the people, not one that exploits them.
