Tension Rises in Chile After Powerful 6.6-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northern Coast

A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck off the coast of Northern Chile on Friday, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported. The quake occurred at a depth of 104 kilometers (64.62 miles), highlighting the region’s ongoing seismic vulnerability.

Experts warn that this recent seismic event underscores Northern Chile’s susceptibility to powerful earthquakes. It follows a major 7.4-magnitude earthquake that rocked the southern coastal areas of Chile and Argentina last month.

That earlier quake, centered near Cape Horn close to Antarctica, struck at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometers (6 miles) and was accompanied by multiple aftershocks. The event prompted Chilean authorities to issue a tsunami warning for the country’s southernmost regions.
