“That’s Not the Priority!” – Charly Boy Reacts to Bus Stop Renaming, Says 2027 Elections Should Be the Real Focus

Veteran Nigerian musician and activist Charles Oputa, widely known as Charly Boy, has urged Nigerians to shift their attention to the upcoming 2027 general elections, emphasizing that civic responsibilities outweigh the controversy surrounding the renaming of a bus stop previously named after him in Gbagada, Lagos.

Appearing on The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Charly Boy stated he was unbothered by the removal of his name from the bus stop. He stressed that recognition should go to individuals who have made genuine contributions to their communities.

“My sister, if you ask me, na who I go ask?” he said. “I don’t know why they do the things they do. It seems petty—really petty—because these aren’t the issues we should be discussing now. Whether you call it Charly Boy or Olamide Baddo, it doesn’t really matter. Our focus should be the 2027 elections. Will our votes count?”

Charly Boy explained that the bus stop was originally named after him in the early 1990s due to his strong community involvement in the Gbagada area.

“I used to live around that bus stop. People in Gbagada at the time felt naming it after me was right,” he said. “I genuinely contributed to that community—military pensioners, Okada riders, young people. I even offered scholarships to some of them. The naming came after I released a song in 1990, so it happened around 1991 or 1992.”

The renaming was recently carried out by the Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), which replaced “Charly Boy Bus Stop” with the name of renowned indigenous rapper and music executive Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as ‘Baddo’.
