Trump: Russia and Ukraine to Begin Immediate Ceasefire Negotiations After Call With Putin

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine will “immediately” begin negotiations for a ceasefire and a potential end to the war, following a two-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Describing the call as “very well,” Trump emphasized that the conditions for peace would need to be agreed upon directly by Moscow and Kyiv. He later informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other world leaders of this development in a follow-up call.

Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s demand for a “full and unconditional ceasefire” and warned that if Moscow isn’t serious, harsher sanctions should be imposed. He emphasized that no decisions about Ukraine should be made without Ukraine’s direct involvement and said he was awaiting details on the proposed memorandum from Russia.

Posting on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump reiterated his belief that both sides are ready for negotiations, noting that only they can define the details of any agreement. Speaking later at a White House event, Trump insisted the U.S. was not backing away from its role in peace efforts, though he admitted he has a personal “red line” for when to stop pushing.

Putin, speaking from Sochi during a visit to a music school, described his conversation with Trump as “frank and constructive,” and confirmed Russia is prepared to negotiate a timeline for peace and a potential ceasefire—though no specific timeframe was discussed.
