‘Unconstitutional’ Rivers Administrator Urges Unity to ‘Facilitate Return of Democratic Governance’

Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), the appointed administrator of Rivers State, has urged residents to embrace unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence as the state works toward the restoration of democratic governance.

Speaking during a Salah courtesy visit by the Muslim community at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Sunday, Ibas emphasized that diversity of opinion must not stand in the way of collective progress. He highlighted the need for mutual respect, harmony, and collaboration, especially during a period marked by political tension and the imposition of emergency rule.

“Looking around, I see you come from different mosques and communities. Yet we are all God’s creation, and He commands us to love our neighbors as ourselves. If we truly live by that, the world—and our state—will be a better place,” Ibas said.

He appealed to the people of Rivers State to reject all forms of hatred and division, stressing the urgency of working together to rebuild trust and restore democratic order.

“As we mark this solemn occasion, let it be a time of reflection, humility, and renewed commitment to unity. Let us do away with divisiveness and embrace a common vision for peace and progress,” he added.

The visit underscored the role of religious and community leaders in promoting reconciliation and inclusivity as Rivers navigates one of its most challenging political chapters.
