A lady on wheelchair, Mrs. Oguntoyose Gbemi (pseudonym), was denied boarding a Dana aircraft because of her disability.
Mrs. Oguntoyose was at the airport this afternoon to board a Dana aircraft for her scheduled trip to Abuja.
Dana Air officials at the airport said its policy has no provision for wheelchair users – disregarding the discrimination against persons with Disabilities (prohibition) Act 2018.
The passenger, despite travelling with the assistance of her sister, was flatly denied access to board the flight as other passengers proceeded with the trip to Abuja this afternoon.
Officials of Dana Air insisted that her flight fee would be refunded as the airline would not convey her because of her disability.
The passenger who explained this wasn’t her first time travelling by air expressed shock at the discriminatory policy of the airline operator.
A fellow passenger and former President, National Association of the Blind, David Okon, who shared the video with Bonews Service lamented the ‘irresponsible policy’ which lacked respect for human dignity.
Okon called for full implementation of the National Disability Act with the aim of addressing unfavorable policies which discriminate against persons with disabilities in the country.
Ironically, Dana Air was in 2019 awarded winner of the Disability Inclusion champion (Transportation Sector) by Project Enable Africa.
