‘We’re Not Yahoo Boys!’: Protesters Slam EFCC Over Late-Night on Student Hostels

Angry youths flooded the streets of Benin City on Tuesday in protest against what they described as relentless harassment and late-night raids by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Despite heavy early morning rain, demonstrators shut down traffic along the busy Ugbowo-Lagos Road for hours, wielding placards and chanting slogans condemning the EFCC’s alleged abuses.

Tensions reached a boiling point when protesters vandalized a van reportedly carrying members of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) near the Isihor area. The crowd, largely made up of students and young residents, accused EFCC operatives of storming student hostels around 2 a.m., arresting occupants at random and labeling them as internet fraudsters.

“We’re tired of being treated like criminals,” one protester said. “EFCC breaks into our hostels at night and arrests everyone indiscriminately. This is not justice.”

Protesters called on Governor Monday Okpebholo and President Bola Tinubu to intervene and rein in the anti-graft agency.

The demonstration highlights growing frustration among young people in Benin, especially students, who say they live in fear of sudden, unprovoked EFCC operations.

In response to the uproar, EFCC ramped up security around its Benin zonal office on High Court Road. Armed personnel set up checkpoints and screened vehicles heading to the facility.

Attempts to reach William Oseghale, spokesperson for the EFCC in Benin, were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone went unanswered.
